The pipes are inside a building’s walls or buried underground. They’re made of steel or copper pipe or sometimes plastic pipe. When they’re buried underground, they’re called “underground plumbing.”

Plumbing systems can be quite complex depending on the size of your home and the number of fixtures it has. For example:

-The kitchen sink has a pipe that brings in fresh water from outside your home through a water line in the wall called a “service line.”

-The service line connects to a large pipe called a “main” that carries water throughout your home. This main pipe branches into smaller pipes that lead to sinks and toilets in different rooms throughout your house.

-The main pipe also branches into smaller lines that connect to water heaters for heating water at different times during the day or night as needed for bathing or washing dishes or clothes.
