We all have to remember that not everyone had plumbing training. So, I will help you become the “toilet-flusher-in-chief” and solve this problem once and for all.
I am writing this guide just because of an incident with me a few months ago. I went to my friend’s toilet, and after using it, its time to flush it. It was an old-fashioned toilet with no control lever, and I didn’t know how to operate it even though I’d been using the toilet my whole life (AAhhh, that was the most frustrating 10 minutes of my life).
At that time, I realized that there are still people who don’t know how to flush any type of toilet. And that’s why I am writing this guide to spread awareness about how to flush different types of toilets or handle various flushing situations smoothly.
The most basic way to flush a toilet is to lift the lid. Then, pull down the lever to release water and waste into the bowl.
How Much Water Does It Take To Flush A Toilet?
Well, I must say It depends on where you live and your toilet type. I’ll explain.
Toilets, or “thrones” as we call them, are a crucial part of any home. They’re not only valid for their intended purpose but also for helping us understand how much water we use in our everyday lives. But how much water does it take to flush a toilet? That’s what we want to know!
The answer depends on where you live. In America, toilets are designed to use 1.6 gallons per flush (GFT), but this rule has some exceptions. If your toilet is older than 15 years old and uses 3 GFT or more per flush, then it’s time for an upgrade.
However, if your toilet uses 1.6 GFT or less per flush, it’s magnificent and should continue working fine.
The average toilet uses between 1.6 and 7 gallons of water per flush, depending on the model and how many times you push the handle. So if you have a low-flow toilet that only uses 1.6 gallons per flush, you’ll need to push the handle twice to eliminate everything you put in there.
But if you have a high-efficiency toilet that uses only 1 gallon per flush (like some models made by Kohler), then all you’ll need is one push to eliminate waste.

How Toilet Flush Work | Working Mechanism
Okay, so now you have an idea how much water it takes to flush a toilet. Now let’s move on to the next topic of this article, which is a toilet’s flushing mechanism. I am adding this section before explaining the different ways to flush any toilet.
Because I personally believe that it would be pretty good if you first understand the flushing mechanism. Because it can lead you to perform the procedure without damaging your toilet. So let’s get started it.
A toilet flush pulls water from the tank into the bowl with a siphon action. The water in the tank is contained in a U-shaped pipe. As you flush the toilet, the handle pulls up on a chain that opens a valve at the bottom of the tank and allows water to flow into another U-shaped pipe connected to both ends of the bowl’s siphon tube.
The liquid flows down one side of this second U-shaped pipe and back up on the other side, creating a siphon effect that sucks more water from the tank into the bowl until enough has gone down so that it rises above its overflow level.
This creates enough pressure inside your toilet bowl to flush whatever waste was down through its waste line into your home’s sewer system.

Here we have come to the main topic of this article. Now I will explain how to flush toilets based on their type and situation. Remember, I am sharing some of my personally used tricks so you can also apply them to do your work.
How To Flush Traditional Toilets?
Step 1: Use the handle on top of the tank to lift and open it.
Step 2: Pour a small amount of water into the bowl. This will help clean out residual toilet paper or debris from the previous flush.
Step 3: Place your hand inside the tank and use your fingers to remove any large pieces of debris from inside the tank (such as hairballs, tissues, etc.). You can also use a brush for this step if you prefer.

Step 1: Before starting, ensure you have plenty of water in the tank. You should also check that the lid is closed because it won’t flush if the lid is open.
Step 2: Next, try pressing one of the buttons on the front panel to see which one works best for you. If you find one button that flushes better than others, go ahead and press that button.
Step 3: Finally, if none of them work well enough for you, just use your hand to push down on the pedal to get things moving again.

How To Flush Sensor Toilet
Sensor toilets are widespread, but it cannot be evident if you have never used one before. The first thing to know is that the flush mechanism differs from what you are used to. When the water fills up in the toilet bowl, a sensor will turn on and activate the flush mechanism.
That was a vital thing that I felt better explaining first. Now move on to the flushing steps.
Step 1: Find the sensor button on top of your toilet. You may need to remove a cover or other piece of furniture to see it.
Step 2: Press down firmly on the sensor button until you hear a click sound effect or feel some resistance as you push down on it. This will activate the flush mechanism and allow you to get rid of any waste left inside your tankless toilet!

How To Flush Bidet Toilet
Bidet toilets are primarily found in Asian countries. So if you are now aware of how to flush a bidet toilet, you can follow these steps.
Step 1: Turn on the water to the bidet.

Step 2: Next, find the lever on the side of the toilet that controls the water flow to fill up the tank. Depress this lever until you hear water rushing into the tank. Then pull up on it until it clicks in place and stops filling.
Step 3: When ready to flush, hold down this lever again until you hear water rushing out of the tank and flushing into the bowl. Then wait a few seconds after all liquid has drained before releasing this lever and replacing its cover.

It’s not a pretty sight, but if you want to ensure your toilet is flushed and clean, it’s the only way.
If the water is off, follow these steps:
Step 1: Put on your rubber gloves and grab a large bucket or container.
Step 2: Flush the toilet to get rid of some water.
Step 3: Put on your goggles and turn on the faucet so there’s enough water to fill up your bucket/container. You’ll need enough water for two flushes.
Step 4: Open the tank lid and pour half of that water into it—enough to fill it halfway (or more than halfway if you have a big toilet).
Step 5: Close the lid again, flush the toilet, then do another filling with more water from your faucet (depending on how much more water you need). Flush again!

Well, chill! Here I am sharing some of the most effective ways to an unclogged toilet which I used too.
Step 1: First, you’ll need to locate the handle on your toilet and turn it clockwise until it’s flushed with the toilet.
Step 2: Next, place a bucket under your toilet bowl and lift it on the handle so water can flow into the bucket. You may need to repeat this step several times until all the water in your tank has emptied.
Step 3: Finally, remove any blockage using a plunger or other device designed for this purpose.
Instead of the above steps, you can try plunging into the toilet yourself. This simple method involves inserting a plunger into the bowl and pressing down on the handle to create suction (which will hopefully break up any blockage). If this works for you, great!
